Project Overview
Northern HV delivered the full installation and commissioning of a 275kV disconnector earth switch at an operational UK transmission substation. The project formed part of a wider asset replacement and network reinforcement programme designed to improve safety, extend asset life, and boost system reliability.
The scope covered mechanical and electrical installation, integration into existing protection and control schemes, functional testing, and final commissioning — all to National Grid Technical Specifications and BS EN standards.
This wasn't a greenfield job. The entire project took place within a live 275kV compound, requiring tight outage windows, strict safety controls, and close coordination with the client's planning team.

Technical Challenges
Live Substation Environment
The works were completed within an operational 275kV compound. This required detailed outage coordination, Safe System of Work planning, and implementation of exclusion zones with controlled access throughout. Our team worked closely with the client's outage planning team to minimise downtime and maintain network resilience.
Precision Mechanical Alignment
Correct alignment of the disconnector blades and earth switch contacts was critical to ensure correct contact pressure, a low-resistance path to earth, and reliable long-term operation. We used laser alignment tools and calibrated torque equipment to achieve manufacturer tolerances.
Protection & Interlocking Integration
The new earth switch required seamless integration into existing electrical interlocking schemes, SCADA control systems, and protection signalling circuits. Our engineers validated all interlocking logic through simulation and functional proving before energisation.
Safety Performance
We completed this project with zero lost time incidents. Daily briefings, task-specific risk assessments, and Permit to Work control under client supervision were standard throughout.
All work complied with CDM Regulations and HV safety rules. In a live transmission environment, there's no room for shortcuts.
